GTA 6 age rating

GTA 6 is rated Mature by the ESRB and PEGI 18 in Europe. Rockstar does not ask anyone for ID — but the shop you buy from might.

The ratings, and where they come from

RegionRatingWhere it is published

EuropePEGI 18The PlayStation Store listing carries the PEGI 18 mark

Confirmed Both of those are on official pages, not press reports.

What the rating is for

The ESRB content descriptors, as published by Rockstar:

Blood and Gore · Intense Violence · Mature Humor · Nudity · Strong Language · Strong Sexual Content · Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Plus a separate notice for In-Game Purchases.

That last one is not part of the age rating. It is a disclosure that the game sells things inside it. Confirmed

Will anyone actually ask for ID?

This is the part people are really asking about, and the answer depends entirely on where you buy:

Where you buyWhat happens
PlayStation Store / Xbox storeNo document is checked. The store uses the date of birth on your account
A child accountBlocked by default. A parent has to change the family settings
A shop, in personSome countries require the retailer to verify age on an 18-rated sale
A key resellerGenerally no check. The age gate is on the console when you redeem

None of this comes from Rockstar. Rockstar sets the rating; the storefront decides how it enforces it. If you are buying for someone under 18, the account settings matter more than the purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What age rating is GTA 6?

ESRB Mature in North America and PEGI 18 in Europe. Both appear on official pages: the ESRB badge on Rockstar's own site and PEGI 18 on the PlayStation Store listing.

Confirmed

Does GTA 6 require ID to buy?

Rockstar does not ask for ID. Whether you are asked depends on where you buy it: console stores check the age on your account, and some countries require shops to verify age on an 18-rated physical purchase.

Confirmed

Can a child's account buy or play it?

Not without a parent changing the settings. Both PlayStation and Xbox block 18-rated purchases and launches on child accounts by default.

Confirmed

Why is it rated 18 and not 16?

The ESRB lists blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. Any one of several of those is enough on its own.

Confirmed

Does it have in-game purchases?

Yes. The ESRB notice includes In-Game Purchases, which is a separate disclosure from the content rating.
