GTA 6 animals
Rockstar has confirmed more than 170 animal species in Leonida. We know how many there are and how they break down; fifteen have been named so far.
Can you hunt them?
This is the question everyone asks first, so here it is up front: Rockstar has not confirmed hunting as an activity in GTA 6. Unconfirmed
What it has said is that there are legendary creatures that are hard to find, an idea carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2, where those animals were hunted. That is where the assumption comes from. It is an assumption, not a fact: Rockstar has not said which creatures they are, or whether you hunt them, photograph them, or simply come across them.
If you see a site telling you how to hunt in GTA 6, it is guessing. Nobody has played the game.
How many there are, and of what
The numbers come from Rockstar in the Game Informer cover story published on 29 September 2026. Confirmed
| Group | How many | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Birds | over 60 types | Distinct plumage between species |
| Land mammals | more than 30 | Includes real Florida invasive species |
| Marine life | no figure given | Several kinds of shark, plus whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish |
| Fish and reptiles | no figure given | Mentioned by Rockstar without a breakdown |
| Total | over 170 species | Several have never appeared in a Rockstar game before |
Every animal named so far
Of the 170-plus, these are the species Rockstar has named or that appear in the official screenshots released to date:
| Where | Species |
|---|---|
| Water and coast | Manatees, sharks, whales, rays, turtles, jellyfish |
| Swamp and land | Alligators, green iguanas, cane toads, armadillos |
| Air | Flamingos, pelicans |
| Brought in by people | Rhesus macaques, feral cats |
The macaques and armadillos are not a joke: they are real invasive species in Florida, and putting them in is part of the location research Rockstar did on the ground. Confirmed
Why 170 is not just a number
The difference from earlier games is not the count, it is how the animals are built. Rockstar rebuilt its hair and fur systems for this:
- Fur that reacts when a person touches the animal.
- Dirt that builds up depending on where it has been.
- Bioluminescence and translucent skin on marine life.
- Different plumage between bird species, not one repeated texture.
What is still unknown
- The other names. Fifteen species are known out of more than 170.
- Whether hunting or fishing exist as activities, and under what rules.
- Which creatures are legendary, and what finding them gets you.
- Whether animals tie into missions or collectibles, as in Red Dead.
- How they are spread across regions: what lives in the keys and what in the swamp.
All of this starts to be answered on 19 November 2026. This page is updated as Rockstar confirms things, and anything unconfirmed stays marked as such. Unconfirmed
Frequently asked questions
Can you hunt animals in GTA 6?
Rockstar has not said so. It has mentioned legendary creatures that are hard to find, which in Red Dead Redemption 2 could be hunted, but hunting has not been confirmed as an activity in GTA 6.
UnconfirmedHow many animals are in GTA 6?
More than 170 species, according to Rockstar: over 60 types of bird, more than 30 land mammals, and the rest split between fish, reptiles and marine life.
ConfirmedWhich animals have been shown so far?
Flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators, green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, rhesus macaques, armadillos, sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish.

Yes, and that is deliberate. Rockstar included real invasive species found in Florida, such as rhesus macaques and armadillos.
ConfirmedIs the wildlife better than Red Dead Redemption 2?
Rockstar presents it as a step beyond Red Dead Redemption 2, but it has never published a species count for that game, so the two cannot be compared directly.
